Predictions and Postdictions for 2024

“Can you see the future, Kerbouchard?”
“Who would wish to? Our lives hold a veil between anticipation and horror. Anticipation is the carrot suspended before the jackass to keep him moving forward. Horror is what he would see if he took his eyes off the carrot.”
― Louis L’Amour, The Walking Drum

I have been offering my predictions for each new year for a long time. My track record on those predictions is only slightly better than the current winning record of the Carolina Panthers, but not by much. Be that as it may, it is fun to speculate what might be, so I am going to do it again for 2024. Generally, here is what we can stay with some degree of certainty about a few items that will probably happen in 2024: (1) there will not be an end to the war in Ukraine (as long as US taxpayer money lasts), but there will be an end to the one involving Israel and Hamas, (2) the Colorado Rockies will not be in the world series, (3) The FDA will not release the final Remanufacturing Guidance, (4) I will not buy an electric vehicle, and (5) Joe Biden will not participate in any ironman competition.

Making predictions any more complicated than the preceding five for the new year is significantly more challenging for me than making postdictions for the last year. I am much better, and frankly gifted at making postdictions. Yes, postdiction is a real word, for example, “It seemed like a good idea at the time, but its failure was entirely postdictable.” My postdictions for 2023 are these: (1) Several elite university presidents’ will demonstrate that it is better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to open their mouth and remove all doubt, (2) Starting a war with Israel is a poor move when your primary strategy is hiding in underground tunnels next to a large body of water, and (3)  Using your father’s influence to amass wealth and then using that money to self-indulge while passing it off as a business expense will not pass even a casual IRS audit.

Looking forward to what 2024 may bring – Happy New Year!!
