Merry Christmas 2024

I was reminded after the recent Presidential election that so many people look to the government to solve our problems and to give us peace and security. Our Declaration of Independence makes it crystal clear that Governments are instituted among men only to secure God-given and unalienable rights such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And when the Government ceases to do that, the people have the right to alter or abolish it. To me, this shows that mankind cannot be trusted for long to do the right thing. Therefore we have periodic elections to either pat the existing folks running government on the back for a job well done or boot them in the rear and put new folks in charge. Read the words below from our Declaration of Independence followed by a quote from the book of Isaiah about an eternal government that will indeed be just.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
Our real joy, peace, surety, and ultimate salvation comes instead from a very unlikely source; a baby born in a manger. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. His dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end.” Isaiah 9:6
I will luxuriate in my thoughts and reflections this month as we approach Christmas. About whom is really in control, and whose plan for all of us is sure, just, and eternal. I will be thankful for 2024 despite the challenges we faced, and I am also looking forward with great expectations of how 2025 will unfold.
